If you have poked around much in the Emerging church conversation, you will notice that most of the people look a lot like me: White and middle class. There are many theories about this. Below is a post by Andre Daley at Mosaic Life in Grand Rapids, MI, where he clipped some quotes about the topic from other discussions.

Very interesting topic. I found the analogy to grunge to describe this fairly well in some ways.
Again, lacking a good definition -- just going on my experiences, I'm pretty sure it isn't a case of style over substance as much as the fact that the style is a fairly big element. The same phenomenon as "emergence" may be occurring in other places, but look totally different because of adaptation to subcultural style (and the lack of the use of the same words).
I was at a Korean American bilingual service church that reminded me of an emergent church in some ways, but in other ways it seemed much more traditional (and traditionally "Western").
I still have difficulties with the doctrinal fluidity that some of the experimental terminology seems to create, though.

I thought the grunge thing was a good analogy too. There is a lot of "styling" going on.
There are several things I see going on that annoy me about the emergent stuff but I still think that some of the thinking by some of the key leaders is quite helpful. If we were living in mid-1500s Europe I suspect we would find a lot of it troubling. (Not that I would equate Brian McLaren to Martin Luther *grin*) I will be curious to read what you think of my next few posts about Chrsitianity and Science.
