I'm looking forward to this series of posts. I struggle with the biblical image of family as a shaping image for the church in our culture because it usually assumes our Western notion of the nuclear family. I recently heard Leonard Sweet say that this is one of the biblical images that is killing the church! I'm as pessimistic but know many people don't feel like members of the family when they attend worship or other church functions. I look forward to your reflections on the image and how it may need reshaping.

Norm, I am with Sweet. The post-industrial idea of family/household (a unit of economic consumption where I get me emotional needs met) that we read back into scritpure is one the most destructive misreads of scripture we have in the church.

Michael, I am looking forward to the series. I am very interested too in more elaboration on that 'destructive misread of scripture.'

Thanks Ruud. I am still thinking a lot of things through. No better way to learn than to blog about it. :)

Bring it on Mr Kruse!
